Laith and his twin brother were born September 2021 at 30 weeks gestation. He is the youngest (by 1 minute!) of 3 and also has a big sister. At some point after birth, Laith suffered a brain hemorrhage which went unnoticed for nearly 8 months. During that time, he was incredibly irritable and cried the majority of his life. It was rare to see Laith smile.
When he finally got an MRI of his brain it showed periventricular leukomalacia (PVL). PVL is an incurable injury which affects the white matter of the brain. This predisposes him to other disabilities. He has been diagnosed with epilepsy and dystonia as well.
As soon as Laith was started on medication for seizures he became the happiest, smiliest baby! He is the sweetest little boy and brightens our lives. We feel so blessed that he is ours.
Laith has many challenges ahead of him in life. There are a lot of unknowns with his type of brain injury. We have no doubt he will continue to impress and amaze us with his strength and determination as we all continue to learn from him.
